15 Years Old, iMatter Youth Council

"I'm expecting a big wave... I always tell my children to be thankful for what they have, because tomorrow it might not be there. They grasp it pretty good. Yeah, I'm very proud of them. ~ William Kanuk, Nelson's father

My main reason for involvement is necessity, locally with sea level rise and nationally with reforming how we view the Earth and our place on it. I have joined the iMatter Youth Council to join a cohesive group of activists like myself who want to help heal the Earth by ceasing our constant abuse.

My name is Leah Booher, I am 15 years old and I matter.

MY STORY.  I became an activist  for the issue of climate change/sea level rise two years ago through a project known as the S.L.A.P. Pole. This project focused on local awareness of sea level rise, and the main reason I became interested was to improve my lack of ability to speak in public at the time. I then became an advocate for the Regional Climate Action Plan, a local piece of legislation, drafted to reform our awful ways. Since then, I have spoken on several panels, events, and climate change forums. The Regional Climate Action Plan and S.L.A.P. Pole are both projects that stress the impacts of human error upon the Earth. My work with our local administrations have reformed my view on the ENDLESS hoops of bureaucracy that keep us stuck.

Solutions

I installed a SLAP project in my community.

Sea Level Awareness Project, or SLAP, is a cool pole that was thought up by Alec Loorz, in Ventura, CA. I saw it and wanted to install some in my community in Florida...

Sea level rise is a big issue in Florida, and other coastal cities, and island countries. These poles help raise awareness about the reality of the consequences of climate change. If you live near the coast, and want to bring attention to the issue of climate change and sea level rise, you can organize and install a SLAP pole too. Resources are below, with instructions of how to go about it.

SLAP Pole Guide

Here's a video we made explaining our SLAP pole.

I am a spokesperson in my community for action on climate change.

In addition to the iMatter Youth Council, I am also a member of the SFLClimateActionPartners.org Speakers Bureau to promote the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Action Plan. The youth voice needs to be part of any processes that confront the realities of the climate crisis.

I recently participated on a panel for the Healing Our World and Ourselves Conference in Orlando, FL and presented another SLAP pole for installation at Veteran's Park in East Boca Raton on Earth Day 2013.

I am leading an iMatter March on September 28, 2013.

Please march with me in your community.

I will be organizing a march in Florida, where I live. It's not hard, and it's a great way to build a team of supporters, as well as a way to let your community know that the climate crisis is about our future.

Join Leah, and the iMatter network of activists, to demand that our governments creates a plan of action

to stop sea level rise, and other impacts of our fossil fuel addiction!
